Its been found in wool in Norse burial grounds, linen in Tutankhamen’s tomb and a common colourant in Egyptian mummy portraits,&nbsp;Cypriot pottery and was even fed to animals to tint their hair and bones.&nbsp; Itajime Shibori dyeing Shibori is an ancient Japanese technique for tie-dyeing fabric to produce different patterns. The name originates from 絞るshiboru = to wring, to squeeze, while shibori is the noun form. The earliest known example of Japanese Shibori dates to the 8th century and was initially introduced from China and was adapted to Japanese traditions and tastes. During the Edo era (17th-19th c) that Shibori became popular, when in response to Tokugawa Shogunate military government forbidding lower class citizens from wearing silk, civilians looked for ways to enhance cheaper cloth made from hemp and renew older, faded and damaged clothes. Indigo was the traditional dye.&nbsp; There are are many types of Shibori dyeing of varying complexities including Kumo Shibori, Nui, Miura and Arashi, etc. Itajime is a shape resist method where traditionally wooden are used to create geometric patterns. For my practice I used some waste plastic instead of wood as it was avaliable and easy to cut. All the fabric used was second hand (cotton bedsheets and linen). I found the tightly folded and bound fabric made it a lot easier to for not introducing excess oxygen into the indigo dye vat, especially for multiple dips.&nbsp; <img width="3024" height="4032" print design&nbsp; Craft &amp; bookbinding Brief: Create a piece of print design which reconnects people to the natural night and darkness.The long-held balance between night and day is being lost, along with the privacy and time for rest or contemplation the darkness allows. Nights are getting lighter, artificially illuminated from the ground. Until a century ago skies were very dark and everyone could look up and see a magnificent starry night sky. But now even the places we consider wild are invaded by light, with only the brightest stars remaining readily visible. From sunset to sunrise, through dusk, twilight, midnight and dawn, there is an ever-changing gradient of light and colours. The aim is that the reader will be more appreciative and attentive to the night and the nuances of darkness. The passing of time and progression through the book is marked by the movement of the sun, symbolised by soft, hazy circles, as if a light spot on the page. The the final pages of the book show the sun rising again as the light returns and another day begins. Process of hand cropping and binding the book.
