The Sea, The Sea

Book cover design
Three-day design sprint

Brief:
Design the cover for Iris Murdoch’s 1978 book The Sea, the Sea. I gave the project a limit of 3-days (from ideas generation to final design and mock-ups) to challenge myself to make quick decisions and explore new ways of working.

Solution:
I explored 4 design routes before choosing one to develop. The novel is theatrical and dramatic so initial inspiration for this concept came from paper cut-out 'peepshows' from the 19th century. For the imagery I used Titian's 1556 painting Perseus and Andromeda, a depiction of the Greek mythological story in which the hero rescues Andromeda from a sacred marriage. Murdoch's story shares parallels with this myth, as well as involving other mysterious events.
