Brief:
Create a brand identity for a new theatre based in Bristol. The theatre aims to widen access to arts and cultural performances. It will showcase the work of a wide range of writers, directors and performers and ensure all community groups are empowered to attend.

Solution:
Bristol’s not-for-profit Works Theatre is housed in the old Carriageworks building in Stokes Croft. This iconic former industrial building informed the brand identity, most notably the name and logo based on the iconic arcs.

Alongside a diverse programme of public productions and live events, Works Theatre also runs outreach workshops for performance skills as an essential part of the theatre’s mission. Ranging from one-off couple-hour workshop to regular weekly sessions, these take place within Works Theatre's own studios spaces, as well as in local schools and community venue to reduce barriers to access.

For the production posters, the arc-shape serves as an image frame; an open door into the theatre world. This forms part a system which is quick and easy for the theatre’s in-house team to apply for each production.

This system is also used for the poster advertising community workshops, although the illustrated characters mark it as distinct programme from the productions. The fun, dynamic illustrations represent the theatre's diverse community and the varying forms of performance arts.

Inside the venue, the theatre’s guiding principles are communicated proudly on vertical banners.
